Voting Dates to Remember in California

The U.S. Supreme Court declined to allow federal restrictions on mail voting. For California, you can vote in the way that works for you. Those choices are one of the great strengths of California’s election system.

  • Check your voting status here. Have you changed address, name, or just need to verify your status? To register to vote or make changes to your status the last day is October 23.
  • Vote By Mail ballots distributed beginning Monday, October 5.
  • Dropboxes are available since Tuesday, October 6.
  • Early voting in person at Vote Centers begins October 24.
  • LWV Easy Voter Guide can help you learn about the candidates and propositions: click VOTE411.
  • Strongly recommended to Vote Early and return via local Dropbox. If returning by post, mail a week or more before November 3 to assure reaching Registrar of Voters by 8 pm Election Day.

Don't Forget - Vote No on Los Altos Measure D

Our League Board voted to oppose Los Altos Measure D, the “Los Altos Downtown Parking Plazas Ordinance” on the 2026 November ballot. This ballot measure would require a city-funded election for each and every modification of the downtown parking plazas except for maintenance and limited affordable housing.  It would also open up the City to costly litigation at a time when resources are better spent on City services. The League based their decision on two League principles:

  • The League believes in representative government and holding elected officials accountable.
  • The League supports housing for all.  This measure makes it unlikely that Los Altos will build housing downtown.

For questions related to this ballot measure or to volunteer with the No on Measure D campaign, please contact Sue Russell.

League Starts Phone Banking for NO on Prop 39

Dora Rose, LWVCA Deputy Director, reminds us that Prop 39 is a Trump-inspired partisan power grab designed to make voting harder, intrude on your privacy, and throw out eligible ballots. The League is an official opponent. Check out the fact sheet.

You'll get clear training, a script, and be able to do it from the comfort of your living room sofa on your phone or on your own computer. Using the campaign's special system means your personal phone number will not be revealed. Read more at the website noonprop39.com

Withdraw Faulty Census Bureau Rule!

On September 10, the Census Bureau announced it would make sweeping changes to how we count people on the census. The comment period was extended until November 2nd. See below to comment.

The proposed rule would count only US citizens and green card holders, NOT other visa holders or undocumented immigrants. It would stop collecting race and ethnicity data and ban the collection of sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) data from any future Census Bureau surveys, including the census.

This ruling would severely distort population counts, giving an inaccurate representation of communities for apportionment and redistricting. The correct data are vital for states and local governments to plan services like education, public health needs, emergency services, disaster planning.

Click to urge Secretary Howard Lutnick to secure the census and withdraw the rule.
