From LWVCA...

Voters Prioritize Protecting Democracy

recent Berkeley IGS poll shows that defending democracy and protecting voting rights are top priorities for California voters. With few federal protections, the responsibility falls to the states. Californians want state leaders to act now to protect voters.

To safeguard our elections the League is following this legislation:

  • SB 73 (Cervantes) Signed into Law: Governor Newsom signed this bill, supported by LWVC, to strengthen election protections against growing interference and voter intimidation, particularly from the Trump Administration. Read the Governor’s press release for details.
  • SB 884 (Umberg) Moving Forward: If passed, this bill will add extra protections against intimidation at polling places and make voting methods more accessible. Read our support letter.

From LWVUS...

Immigration and the League of Women Voters

The League of Women Voters’ position on immigration policies is to promote the reunification of immediate families, meet economic, business, and employment needs, and be responsive to those facing political persecution or humanitarian crises.

Recently, League members were asked to remind your Congressional representatives to say ‘no’ to additional ICE and CBP funding. You still have time to make your voice heard on this issue, especially since ICE is in the process of building a detention center here in Santa Clara County.

Take Action

Defend Democracy! Contact Your State Assemblymember!

Actions by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents right here in California are deeply troubling. They are trying to commandeer state and local police to act through federal task forces. In addition, ICE is trying to locate another detention center in Santa Clara County.

Such acts use California resources in ways that support racially discriminatory immigration enforcement activities, violating our laws and threatening our rights.

SB 1105 (Perez-SD 25), the Protect California Rights Act, has has been approved in the Senate and passed to the Assembly. It responds to harms being perpetrated by the Trump Administration and DHS agents, and protects Californians by:

  • Prohibiting state and local law enforcement agencies from entering into joint task forces or interagency agreements that assist racial or identity profiling, criminalization of speech, or use of unauthorized weapons of war.
  • Ensuring that California does not give federal law enforcement officers acting beyond their federal jurisdiction broad power to stop and arrest Californians.

Protect vulnerable California rights.

Contact your state assemblymember to vote YES on SB 1105.
