League Members Help LAHS Juniors Pre-Register to Vote

In April 2026 the League of Women Voters and The Civics Center announced a cross-country collaboration to foster voter registration in US high schools and empower the next generation of American voters to participate fully in public life. Considering the collaboration, members can be assured that since 2018 LWV Los Altos Mountain View Area has been pre-registering high school students to vote.

On May 19 and 20, 2026, at Los Altos High School, eleven LWV volunteers visited 17 classes where 399 students learned about the process, and 273 pre-registered to vote. Thirteen students had already pre-registered, usually at the DMV when obtaining their drivers’ licenses. Efforts of the League, administration, US History and AP US History teachers, and the Voices in Politics school club empowered students to take their first step in democracy.

In addition, last September 2025, LWV was asked to provide the voter registration materials, but no volunteers, to Mountain View High School. Of 321 US History and AP US History students who received the LWV materials, an additional 91 students, 16 and 17 years old, pre-registered.

According to research by The Civics Center, “high school voter registration is the most untapped and unknown resource to increase voter participation in our democracy, especially among young people. Only when high school voter registration becomes as routine as homecoming and prom will the promise of the 26th amendment be fulfilled.”

Immigration and the League of Women Voters

The League of Women Voters’ position on immigration policies is to promote the reunification of immediate families, meet economic, business, and employment needs, and be responsive to those facing political persecution or humanitarian crises.

Recently, League members were asked to remind your Congressional representatives to say ‘no’ to additional ICE and CBP funding. You still have time to make your voice heard on this issue, especially since ICE is in the process of building a detention center here in Santa Clara County.

Take Action

Defend Democracy! Contact Your State Senator!

Actions by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents right here in California are deeply troubling. They are trying to commandeer state and local police to act through federal task forces. They are trying to locate another detention center in Santa Clara County.

Such acts use California resources in ways that support racially discriminatory immigration enforcement activities, violating our laws and threatening our rights.

SB 1105 (Perez-SD 25), the Protect California Rights Act, responds to harms being perpetrated by the Trump Administration and DHS agents, and protects Californians by:

  • Prohibiting state and local law enforcement agencies from entering into joint task forces or interagency agreements that assist racial or identity profiling, criminalization of speech, or use of unauthorized weapons of war.
  • Ensuring that California does not give federal law enforcement officers acting beyond their federal jurisdiction broad power to stop and arrest Californians.

Contact your state senator to vote YES on SB 1105.
