Advocacy Update

League of Women Voters California is a co-sponsor of two bills (SB 1164 and SB 1360) within the California Voting Rights Act of 2026 package. This is a landmark package of bills designed to confront discriminatory barriers before they reach the ballot box.

LWVC also champions two bills that address systemic inequities in our courts and our local representation.

AB 1958 (Kalra) – Making the Racial Justice Act Work: This bill fixes the hurdles faced in the original Racial Justice Act. Assembly Bill 2542 , September 2020, prohibits the state from seeking or obtaining a criminal conviction or imposing a sentence based on race, ethnicity, or national origin. This bill ends repeated, costly litigation over disparities in data requests; removes the burden of presenting both statistical and non-statistical evidence in every case; applies the RJ Act procedures to the entire process - including plea bargaining and other pretrial resolutions.
SB 1414 (Reyes) – Independent Redistricting for San Bernardino County: In one of California’s largest and most diverse counties, supervisors currently draw their own district lines - a clear conflict of interest. This bill is a vital step toward ensuring a large, diverse population is fairly represented by a process that serves the public interest.

SB 1414 replaces the supervisor-led process with an Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission to handle map-drawing. By using strict conflict-of-interest safeguards, the bill ensures district lines protect communities, not the political careers of incumbents.

You can follow the live progress of these bills and every other position LWVC takes this session.

Defend Democracy! Contact Congress!

Last month, the US Supreme Court dealt a devastating blow to the 1965 Voting Rights Act, critically weakening Section 2 and making it much harder to challenge racially discriminatory congressional maps, disproportionately affecting Black communities.

Last month you also heard about Congress working to allocate additional funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP)−agencies that have targeted our neighbors of color and irreparably harmed our communities.

Once more, help demand that Congress reject new funding for ICE and CBP. At a time when the rights and freedoms of communities of color are under attack all over the country, we must stand up and fight for a truly representative, multiracial democracy.

Contact Congress NOW.
