From LWV Los Altos Mountain View Area...

Notes from Annual Planning Meeting

At the February 7, 2026, Annual Planning Meeting at St. Timothy’s Church, League members heard updates from committees and on the League position on the Federal Judiciary.

An engaged group of members participated in the following discussions:

Jacquie Tanner led a discussion of the 2025-2026 national Unite and Rise campaign and the proposed "Women Defend Democracy:  Democracy under Siege" for 2026-2027.

Members voted on LWV Concurrence requests: Rights of Immigrants in the United States (Washington); Religious Freedom, Separation of Church and State (Colorado); Health Care De-Privatization Position (New York). Although there was support for these proposed changes to the League positions, particularly for the positions on immigrants and separation of church and state, there wasn’t concurrence on any of the proposals.

Our League voted to support making democracy work, engaging younger voters to vote, and housing as our priorities for the coming year.

The complete minutes for the Annual Program Planning Meeting will be found on the website.

LWVC Positions on Access to Democracy

The League of Women Voters works to expand access to democracy, defend civil rights, and strengthen communities through informed civic engagement. It has been a difficult and heavy start to the year for many of us. Across the country - and here in California - we are witnessing deeply troubling and harmful ICE activity that is creating fear and uncertainty in our communities.

Please know that the League of Women Voters of California is working closely with the League of Women Voters of the United States and with many of our local chapters to respond. Together, we are developing civic action toolkits and other resources to help clarify what civilians can and cannot safely do in response to these actions.

From LWVUS...

Expanded Version of SAVE Act Passed HR Vote

The House voted Yes on the SAVE America Act on February 11, which is one of two new and expanded versions of the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act that passed the House last year. It adds the requirement that individuals present documentary proof of citizenship (DPOC) to vote in federal elections.

This bill came up as another version of the bill titled Make Elections Great Again Act  (MEGA Act). Both were introduced at the end of January. Both require photo ID when voting, require proof of citizenship when registering to vote, change voter list maintenance in states, require mail-in ballots to be received by Election Day, ban universal vote by mail, and more.

Note, even voters who are properly registered and showed documentary proof of citizenship ahead of the registration deadline could be unable to vote if they show up to the polls on election day without their passport.

Tell the Senate to vote NO on this expanded bill that will suppress votes.

Prepare Ahead for This Challenging Moment

Even in this challenging moment for the U.S., there are important reminders of the League’s power and impact. A few weeks ago, in the case of USA v. Weber, the LWVC scored a key victory against the Trump administration over access to the personal information of California’s 23 million voters, persuading a federal judge to grant our motion to dismiss the Justice Department’s lawsuit demanding the data.

LWVC has 7000 members. That membership strength is what allowed the Court to grant our request to intervene in the case, recognizing LWVC as a legitimate voice representing the interests of California voters. Please make sure your membership is current so we can continue to stand up, intervene, and protect voters in Sacramento, at the ballot box, and in the courtroom.
