From LWV California ...

California League Advocates Beyond Legislation

League advocacy doesn’t stop at the Capitol. Moving into 2026, the League is deeply engaged in the courts to protect democracy.

  • Issa v. Weber: Moved to intervene to defend California’s rule that vote-by-mail ballots postmarked by Election Day and received within seven days must count - protecting hundreds of thousands of ballots each election.
  • Louisiana v. Department of Commerce: Seeking to intervene to stop states from excluding residents from the Census count, which would strip communities of representation and funding.
  • US v. Weber: Intervening in the lawsuit in which the U.S. Department of Justice sued California to obtain the state’s unredacted voter registration list - standing up for voter privacy and against federal overreach.

Take Action

Contact CA Senators Again About the SAVE Act

Documentary proof of citizenship (DPOC) supporters continue efforts to impose proof of citizenship when registering to vote through any possible channel. This includes a petition to the Election Assistance Commission, outside influence from state officials to members of Congress, and state efforts when legislative sessions begin in January.

The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act has passed the House and a vote in the Senate might take place at any time.

Contact Senators Padilla and Schiff HERE.

Legislation like the SAVE Act is another in a long list of tactics, like strict voter photo ID requirements and limitations on voter assistance in languages other than English, which seek to make it more difficult for voters of color and naturalized citizens to vote. Americans do not need MORE obstacles to vote.
