From LWV California ...

Why League Member Support Matters

2025 was a year when democracy itself was on the line and the League of Women Voters of California rose to meet the challenge. Here are four important bills, some supported by the League, one opposed, and one to re-introduce in 2026.

  • SB 851 (Cervantes & Pellerin): introduced late in the session, this law protects voters and election officials from intimidation and federal interference. It bars unauthorized armed agents from polling places, strengthens oversight of election lawsuits, closes deceptive ballot collection loopholes, and affirms that certifying results is about counting votes, not politics.
  • AB 85 (Essayli): the bill which would have rolled back the California Values Act that created our sanctuary state provisions and forced local police to collaborate with federal immigration agents never made it through committee.
  • AB 260 (Aguiar-Curry): This measure secures access to medication abortion in California by aligning state statute with our constitutional guarantee of reproductive freedom
  • AB 868 (Carrillo): League-sponsored bill to modernize county elections by requiring the top two vote-getters to advance to November. This reform would end the practice of deciding offices in low-turnout primaries. The bill was not completed in committee and will be re-introduced in 2026 to pass in time for the mid-term elections.
