| League of Women Voters of California Position on
Proposition 50
Click here to see the complete statement that explains our neutral position, provides context for that position, and shifts the focus to empowering California voters.
On the heels of Texas’ decision re re-districting mid-census cycle, California Governor Newsom and the legislature moved forward to do mid-cycle redistricting. The ballot measure language has been finalized.... LWVC recognizes the importance of staying aligned with our national League and also with state and local Leagues.... With these factors in mind, LWVC does not take a position on Proposition 50. | | Three Signed Bills to be Proud Of
Governor Newsom has signed League-sponsored bill SB 42 (Umberg) - the California Fair Elections Act! This sends the measure to the November 2026 ballot, giving voters the power to decide whether to lift the ban on public financing of campaigns and reduce the influence of money in politics.
The governor also signed AB 260 (Aguiar-Curry) which protects access to medication abortion, ensuring that patients, providers, and facilities can continue to provide safe, legal, and accessible reproductive healthcare.
He signed SJR-1 (Wiener) which rescinds all of California’s prior calls for a Constitutional Convention, closing the door on a process that could have put the Constitution at risk, has passed and is on its way to the federal government to be officially tallied.
Keep an eye out for the 2025 Advocacy Wrap Up in the LWVC’s annual November Democracy Works Newsletter. You can also see information on all bills by viewing our LWVC Bill Status Report. Please also subscribe to LWVC action alerts! That’s how to make your voice heard by legislators on bills advocated for by LWVC. | Share Resources to Empower Your Vote
