| Girls Just Wanna Defend Democracy
On the evening of August 27 fans arrived for Cyndi Lauper's Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Farewell Tour at Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View. Fun-loving volunteers from the Los Altos Mountain View Area League of Women Voters greeted them with information about registering to vote, the dangers of the proposed SAVE Act, and swag. Cyndi Lauper has invited local Leagues to attend all her U.S. concerts to promote voting and defend our democracy. Our League volunteers connected with well over 300 people at the event.
Pictured left are Lisa McLain, Claudia Hevel, Cynthia Topole, Cyndi Lauper, Katie Zoglin, Gloria Kawahira, and Katie Campodonico. At right are Lisa McLain and Grace Kawahira with swag.

Defending democracy is demanding much of us in these times, but we are all in this together.
| League of Women Voters of California Announces Neutral Position on Proposition 50
Click here to see the complete statement that explains our neutral position, provides context for that position, and shifts the focus to empowering California voters.
Early in the process, before the ballot language was written, we, along with several other good government groups, issued independent statements opposing mid-cycle redistricting. This was consistent with the League’s long-standing positions at both the state and national level.
Since then, and on the heels of Texas’ decision, California Governor Newsom and the legislature moved forward to do mid-cycle redistricting. The ballot measure language has been finalized. While the process for the redistricting in California differs from what is happening in Texas, LWVC recognizes the importance of staying aligned with our national League and also with state and local Leagues, such as in Texas, that are, or may soon be, in court challenging unfair maps.
With these factors in mind, LWVC does not take a position on Proposition 50. | Still Far From Equal
August 26 is commonly known as Women’s Equality Day. However, the recently passed “One Big Beautiful Bill” will deprive millions of women of health care, particularly reproductive care.
The SAVE Act, which is currently before the US Senate, threatens to make it harder for women who’ve changed their names to cast their ballots.
Attacks on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion threaten to erase the fight for equal rights from our schools and museums.
Unfortunately, the attacks on women don’t stop there. The erosion of democracy under the current administration has put our country into a constitutional crisis — and their antidemocratic actions make equality impossible.
We launched Unite and Rise 8.5 to fight back against authoritarianism. Our democracy, and equality, depend on it.
If you haven’t yet, fight for equality. Sign our commitment form to become a part of the movement to push back against inequality. |
