LWV and FEDERAL JUDICIARY
The League’s Statement of Position on the Federal Judiciary was announced by the national board, June 2025. The League of Women Voters of the United States (LWVUS) believes that all powers of the US government should be exercised within the constitutional framework of the balance of powers among the three branches of government. The League believes that, within the bounds of the US Constitution, the overarching principles of transparency, accountability, independence, and ethics are essential to an effective federal judiciary. These principles are not only essential for a strong democracy but foster public trust in the federal judiciary and adherence to the rule of law, the essence of our constitutional democracy.

| SB 42 - A Bold Step to Take Back our Democracy
The Political Reform Act of 1974 was meant to change public campaign financing. Now, SB 42, California Fair Elections Act of 2026, lifts California’s outdated ban on public financing of campaigns – but only if the Legislature passes it and voters approve it on the ballot in 2026.
SB 42 doesn’t impose public financing – it gives voters the power to choose it.
- Public financing amplifies the voices of small donors and everyday voters.
- It lowers barriers to running for office, helping build a more diverse and representative democracy.
- It restores trust by reducing the stranglehold of wealthy special interests on our political system.
The legislation has passed in the Senate and now is headed to the Appropriations Committee in the Assembly. Contact co-author Marc Berman to curb big money’s grip on politics and restore equity, transparency, and accountability. |
