Local news is a cornerstone of our democracy, but it has been in crisis nationwide. At its 2024 convention the League of Women Voters recognized that the decline of local news is a threat to democracy. Adam Dawes will describe how the news business has changed and how Embarcadero Media is evolving to meet these trends and preserve the Palo Alto Weekly, Almanac, Mountain View Voice, and Redwood City Pulse for years to come. | Consider LWV LAMV Observer Corps

Why is there a housing problem in California? What barriers are preventing communities from accessing affordable housing? What can we do to improve access to and availability of affordable housing? | Challenging Trump’s Recent Anti-Voter Executive Order
A coalition of voting rights organizations filed a lawsuit in the US District Court for the District of Columbia to challenge President Trump’s unlawful executive order on voting.
The order attempts to seize the power to set voter registration rules from Congress and the states and doing so in a way that would violate federal law and the Constitution if carried out by the Election Assistance Commission (EAC).
Key provisions of Trump’s order could disenfranchise millions of eligible voters, particularly voters of color, women voters, naturalized citizens, voters with disabilities, voters with low incomes, and first-time voters.

Choose one or two issues on which to focus your activist efforts.
This will allow you to be far more effective. Besides the national protest on April 5, you can
- Contact your elected officials: use the League’s action alerts to easily email your representatives on important issues, including voting rights.
- Attend local government meetings: A crowd of citizens attending a local government meeting can be very compelling.
- Boycott: You have consumer power. Best to boycott as a collective action to pressure a company or organization.
