Decline of Local News Affects Democracy

The film details why the League of Women Voters of the United States adopted a position in support of local news at its National Convention in June in Washington, D.C. An overwhelming majority of delegates from Leagues across the country agreed that the decline of local news affects democracy. They voted to adopt the following position: The LWVUS defines local news as accurate, in-depth coverage of government entities, including but not limited to, city councils, county councils, county boards of commissioners, health departments, schools, and school boards.

From LWVC …

Judicial Review to Prioritize Justice and Rehabilitation

The League’s legislative focus on Senate Bill 94 (Cortese SD15) states that life without parole (LWOP) sentences imposed decades ago are no longer consistent with modern sentencing. Judicial discretion is allowed, taking into account mitigating factors.

SB 94 would allow people sentenced for events that occurred before 1990 and who have served at least 25 years of their LWOP sentence to have one chance for a judge to review their sentence. As California works to make our criminal legal system more just, effective, equitable, and transparent, we must incentivize rehabilitation.
