Is Housing Healthcare?

The Impact of Housing Instability & Housing Quality on Our Health

Is health a matter of personal responsibility or a public, collective good? The goal of the League of Women Voters Bay Area public health series is to raise awareness of the importance and value of the public health system as a vital part of the civic health in our communities.

  •  Wednesday, July 18, 2024 12:00 to 1:15 pm

The series event will spotlight the increased health risks of unstable and poor-quality living conditions on our health outcomes. County of Santa Clara Supervisor, Cindy Chavez; Melissa Jones, Executive Director of BARHI; and Alison Cingolani, Policy Manager SV@Home will share their expertise on housing as a health related social need.

From LWVC...
A Juneteenth Legacy - CA ACA 8

Juneteenth marks when the last enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, were informed of their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. This year, the LWVC advocacy team’s work on ACA 8 (Lori Wilson, D11) is one example of our commitment to end slavery in all forms.

It is a long overdue amendment to the California Constitution to prohibit ‘involuntary servitude’, a term for a person laboring against that person’s will to benefit another when being used as a punishment for a crime. The measure would prohibit the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation from disciplining any incarcerated person for refusing a work assignment. The bill is currently enrolled and filed by the Secretary of State to go to the governor.

Motor Voter’s Future Success

The New Motor Voter Program has successfully registered nearly 26 million Californians through the Department of Motor Vehicles since its launch in 2018. Each year, the Secretary of State is required to work with the DMV and the Motor Voter Task Force to review the California New Motor Voter Program. The 2023 Annual Report is now available. Of the key findings in 2023-24, 4,931,101 people registered to vote. Of these, 89.8% were registered through the California New Voter Program – increase of 10% from 2022-23.

To further this success, AB 2127 (Marc Berman, D23) is an LWVC co-sponsored bill with ACLU to extend the operation of the task force for five years to January 2030. AB 2127 would extend the tenure of the California New Motor Voter taskforce in order to ensure effective implementation and evaluation of the New Motor Voter program as it is updated and refined. So far the bill has passed the Senate Committee on Elections and Constitutional Amendments, and the Senate Transportation Committee. It will next be heard in Senate Appropriations.

You Can Still Support John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act

At the end of June, hundreds of League members from across the country gathered in Washington, DC, to meet with their members of Congress in support of the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act (JLVRAA). Passing the Act will repair the damage done to the Voting Rights Act of 1965 (VRA) by the 2013 US Supreme Court decision in Shelby County v. Holder.

We are still engaged in the fight against voter discrimination.
