Members Take a ‘Sea Level Rise’ Walk
Before heading out on our sea level rise walk, Mountain View Mayor Pat Showalter showed a map of the areas of Shoreline and Mountain View projected to flood as sea levels rise in the future. With this image in our minds, seventeen League members and family headed out to see the many infrastructure projects that will reduce the impacts of sea level rise around Shoreline and Mountain View. We learned about the process of restoring salt ponds to natural tidal wetlands and wildlife habitat. This restoration will mitigate the impacts of sea level rise, buffer waves that come with rising tides and support local wildlife. Many of our walking trails around Shoreline sit on levees that will be raised and, eventually, the Stevens Creek Trail will extend further into the bay.
City and governmental agencies along with environmental groups are collaborating on 14 projects to help protect our communities against sea level rise. To learn about what is being done locally, read 2020 Shoreline Sea Level Rise Study Update 2021. To see a map of areas projected to flood check out Figure 3 on page 12.
Thank you to Mayor Showalter for an educational tour and for your long term commitment to the League. |
