ONE TIME EVENTS

Affordable Electrification for Everyone

How Phasing Out of Fossil Fuels Will Lead to Healthy Homes, Clean Air, and a Climate-Safe Future

  • Wednesday, June 22nd, 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm (Virtual)
  • To Attend:  REGISTER HERE
  • Speakers:  Diane Bailey, Director of Menlo Spark &  Bruce Hodges, Founder of Carbon Free Palo Alto
As we collectively experience the impacts of climate change with more severe drought, wildfires, and extreme weather, it’s important to stay centered on what we can do about it. Electrification dramatically reduces carbon pollution by phasing out the methane gas (aka “natural gas”) used in homes & buildings and the gasoline and diesel fuels used in transportation.

There’s a big opportunity to make a difference when replacing natural gas water heaters, appliances, and furnaces, by switching to clean electric, zero-emission models. We can also adopt EVs and other clean transportation solutions. How can we do this equitably for all communities, and how can planning ahead put you on an affordable path to electrification?

Engaging Youth in our Democracy

WATCH:  Engaging Youth in our Democracy (45 minutes)

At our 2022 Annual Meeting, Julie Yick, Ed.D., lead us in a discussion about working together with students to promote civic engagement in our communities.   Dr. Yick shared her thoughts about building bridges between communities to increase community involvement and to “breathe life into our democracy”. We heard from two of her students who spoke about how they became active in social justice issues.

We went into breakout rooms to brainstorm ideas about inspiring students to become involved and how teens and adults might work more collaboratively. Afterwards we discussed ideas about how our League might work together with students to improve our communities and strengthen our democracy.

During the business portion of our Annual Meeting we elected our new board, passed our budget and program for next year and updated some of our local positions.

Julie Yick Wong Koppel, Ed.D. is a social studies teacher and educational leader in the Mountain View Los Altos High School District. She has taught and directed educational programs in highly diverse communities throughout California, Mexico, and Puerto Rico. She currently teaches at Mountain View High School and is the MVLA Ethnic Studies Curriculum Task Force Chair. She has an extensive background in curriculum design, multicultural education, literacy development programs, and teaching multilingual learners.
