Our annual meeting was held on June 8th at Michaels at Shoreline. With a quorum of 36 members present, those in attendance approved three areas of emphasis for the coming year: “Making Democracy Work”, housing and homelessness, and climate change. The membership also approved the national League’s area of emphasis: “Making Democracy Work”.
Katie Zoglin, our president, highlighted some of the activities that took place during the year. In addition to candidate forums and outreach at the Mountain View farmers’ market, League members provided voter information at Los Altos and Mountain View High Schools. They registered and pre-registered over 350 students to vote. The Housing Committee advocated for affordable housing, monitored how the cities are doing to address the housing crisis, and sent letters to public officials on these topics.
In addition to these regular activities, your League organized three new programs in 2024:
New Voter Workshop: In February, the League partnered with five members of Leadership Mountain View to help a diverse group of first-time voters understand the primary ballot. The League provided information and answered questions about the ballot. The discussions were translated into three different languages. The first-time voters asked wonderful questions and discussed the proposition on the ballot.
Sea Level Rise at Shoreline: In May, Mountain View Mayor Pat Showalter provided a guided walk at Shoreline Park to explain the impacts of sea level rise and the steps Mountain View is taking to address it.
High School Community Engagement and Outreach Grant: The League awarded the first ever Community Engagement and Outreach Grant to members of the Los Altos High School Green Team. The grant is designed to engage high schoolers in issues that are important to the League. The LAHS Green Team will use the grant to educate students about how to properly recycle their trash.
