League Awards Community Engagement and Outreach Grant

On May 1,2024, President Katie Zoglin presented the first ever LA-MV Area LWV Community Engagement and Outreach Grant to members of the Los Altos High School Green Team. The grant is designed to engage high schoolers in issues of importance to the League.

Students were asked to apply for $500 grants in any of four of League’s primary focus areas: voter participation/education; mental health/wellness; housing/ homelessness; and climate change/climate action.

The LAHS Green Team was awarded their grant to promote “Sustainable Waste Distribution at Los Altos High School.”The team spent many months working with the school district to ensure that containers and utensils used on campus were compostable. Now, students need to learn how to properly sort/recycle the used items so that they are successfully processed. The team will design and create new signage and educational materials with funds from their CEO grant.

Congratulations to the LAHS Green Team and thank you for your work on climate action!

Observer Reports from LWV LAMV

Read our latest Observer Report from Los Altos where the City Council in April:

  • made adjustments to building Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) in order to remove barriers to construction. Neighbors are not happy about the sight lines.
  • Some children’s programs at the San Antonio Club will be phased out as the building needs renovation. Future programs will be run by the Children’s Corner, which oversees children’s programs at the Los Altos Community Center.

Read our latest Observer Report from Los Altos School District where the Board on April 1:

  • approved a Memorandum of Understanding with the Palo Alto Unified School District which would allow Transitional Kindergarten through eighth grade students living in Palo Alto to attend Gardner Bullis School. Currently only students Kindergarten through sixth grade may do so.
  • heard CAW Architects present an updated Facilities Master Plan for the district’s nine schools.

From LWVC…

Ensure that Every Voice is Heard and Valued

Each legislative victory is a step toward a more inclusive and democratic society. The League’s efforts demonstrate unwavering commitment to empowering voters and defending democracy. In a critical election year the League continues to fight to make sure every Californian has the right, the desire, the knowledge, and the confidence to participate in our democracy. Two more important bills supported by LWVC:

The California Freedom to Read Act (AB 1825, Muratsuchi) prohibits public libraries from banning books or other materials based on the topic or content. This critical legislation was supported by the League's testimony and a powerful letter that was quoted in the Assembly Judiciary Committee's analysis, highlighting the dangers of erasing diverse voices through censorship. The bill has successfully passed the Assembly Judiciary Committee and moves to the Appropriations Committee.

Empowering Young Voters (AB 2627, Pellerin) addresses the disproportionately low voter registration and civic participation rates among Californians aged 18 to 34. This bill proposes the Civic Learning, Outreach, and Engagement Fund to enhance civic engagement among young voters. The LWVC supports programs that bring more people into the democratic process and amplify the voices of youth and underrepresented voters. LWVC is working with Assemblymember Pellerin to amend the bill to encourage counties to collaborate with community-based organizations to assist in design and implementation of programs to reach students from communities that have been historically underrepresented in voter registration and voting.
